Why We Don’t Use Props (and What to Bring Instead)

The beauty of natural moments in family and maternity photography

We get asked this a lot at Adree Chan Photography:
"Should I bring props to the shoot?"
"Do you provide props for maternity or family sessions?"

The short answer? No — and that’s very intentional.
We believe that the most powerful photos come from the real, intimate, and candid moments you share with your loved ones — not from props or setups.

Why We Skip the Props

Props can be cute, but they often take the focus away from what really matters: the connection between you and your family. Our photography style is minimalist and storytelling-driven. That means no distracting decor, no elaborate setups — just you, in your most natural and comfortable state.

Whether it’s a mother cradling her growing bump or siblings giggling mid-chase, we want to capture those unscripted moments that you’ll look back on and feel all over again.

“Adree captured the most natural shots of our family. Nothing felt posed or forced — and yet, every photo was filled with emotion.”

What to Bring Instead: Personal Touches That Matter

While we don’t use traditional props, we absolutely encourage you to bring items that hold personal meaning. These often tell your story better than anything store-bought ever could.

For Maternity Shoots

  • 🍼 Sonogram of your baby – A beautiful symbol of the life growing within you.

  • 👣 Baby socks, shoes, or a romper – Sweet and subtle, they hint at what’s to come.

  • 🧸 A soft toy you’ve already picked out – Bonus: it can be used again during newborn or family shoots!

These personal touches make your maternity photos more meaningful and unique to your journey.

For Family Shoots

  • 🫧 Bubbles – A simple but magical way to get kids laughing and moving naturally.

  • 🧸 Favourite comfort toy or blanket – Helps children feel at ease and often becomes a sweet feature in the photos.

  • 🍎 Snacks – Because a happy, well-fed toddler makes for better (and more fun) moments. Plus, snack breaks can be a great reset during longer shoots.

“Adree worked so well with our toddler — she even suggested using bubbles to get him to smile. It worked like a charm, and the photos are amazing!”

It’s Not About the Props. It’s About the People.

The truth is, the best photos come from the simplest moments — a hug, a laugh, a glance. Props can never replace the natural interactions between parent and child, partners, or siblings. Our job is to capture that chemistry, in a space where you can just be yourselves.

And that’s where the magic lives.
